Jane Allen Harding

Jane Harding Slater, 63, of Manakin-Sabot, passed away March 26, 2015. Born in Washington, D.C., she was a daughter of the late John Milton Harding and Eva Hancock Harding and grew up in Alexandria, Va. 

She was the beloved wife for 42 years of Richard K. Slater; and is also survived by four children, Elizabeth Slater Costello, Christine Slater Tillar and her husband, David, Laura Slater Mawyer and her husband, Taylor, and Jason Richard Slater and his wife, Mary; eight grandchildren, Grant, Katelyn and Eva Costello, Mason, Michael and Emily Tillar, and Jane and Ryan Mawyer; and her sister, Linda H. Grove. 

Mrs. Slater was a graduate of George Mason University in elementary education. She used those skills to raise their family in Vienna, Va., prior to moving to the Richmond area 10 years ago. She loved their home in Marco Island, Fla., where they spent the winter months and she was an avid shell collector. Mrs. Slater was a former member of Westwood Country Club in Vienna, Va. and a member of Hermitage Country Club in Manakin-Sabot and The Members Club of Marco Island. She was a skilled golfer and tennis player, having won several championship flights. 

Mrs. Slater was a member of River Road Presbyterian Church, where she served as a deacon. The family will receive friends from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Monday at the West Chapel of Bennett Funeral Home, 11020 West Broad St. A funeral service will be held 10 a.m. Tuesday, March 31 at River Road Presbyterian Church. Brice Wilson “Buddy” Rhyne Jr

January 9, 1950 – November 4, 1979 @ 29 Memorial FindAGrave Link Buddy lived in Brooklyn and was employed by the Metropolitan Museum of Fine Arts in New York City at the time of his suicide (during a visit to Alexandria).  When he was a college student at Columbia College, he wrote an Letter to the Editor re a mugging. 

Kathryn Joyce “Kathy” Barwick

October 11, 1950 – August 17, 1969 @ 18 Memorial FindAGrave Link The Kathy Barwick Music Scholarship was established in 1970   by William and Joyce Barwick of Alexandria, in memory of their daughter, Kathy Barwick, who died of leukemia in 1969. She had played the violin in the T.C. Orchestra and attended the Virginia Music Camp. The scholarships have been awarded annually to an orchestra member from each of the city's secondary schools, c hosen for their talent and ability as well as involvement in their school music program. The students attend the Virginia Music Camp at Mary Baldwin College in Staunton, Virginia.
