November 13, 2015

Dear Friends,

As you all likely know by now, my mom, Carol Willoughby, passed peacefully in her sleep early Wednesday morning, November 11th, Veterans Day. A day befitting to the core of her soul as she fought tirelessly for over four decades with rheumatoid arthritis.

She was a true fighter in life advocating for those who felt without a voice many of whom were also disabled. Where she saw a way that she could make a lasting impact, she never gave up or took no for an answer, and through her love, showed us all how beautiful life is even while suffering more than most ever will.

In 1996, her determination resulted in the establishment of Saint Francis Service Dogs, a 501(c)3 not-for-profit foundation whose purpose is to assist children and adults with disabilities become more independent and self-sufficient through partnership with a professionally trained service dog.

While the family is deeply saddened with this tremendous loss, we are also blessed to know that she is freed from the pain and limitations of her body. She will always be close to our hearts, as close a thought and remembrance. Her spirit now flies free.

In lieu of flowers, the family has asked that donations be sent to the organization she founded - Saint Francis Service Dogs, P.O. Box 19538, Roanoke, VA 24019. Phone: 540-342-3647 or by visiting http://www.saintfrancisdogs.org/

Thank you all so very much for the love and memories shared.

Sincerely,

Greg Willoughby on behalf of Doug Willoughby and family

In the mid-1990s, Willoughby, plagued by rheumatoid arthritis and later confined to a wheelchair, founded the Saint Francis Service Dogs organization in the Roanoke Valley from her kitchen table.
